Best Places To Go Camping in Victoria

With summer just around the corner it’s the perfect time to get out and about and spend some time in nature. These top camping spots will give you a good idea of where to go camping in Victoria to explore the wonderful outdoors.

We are all so busy nowadays. Constantly on the go, checking our phones, our emails, working and spending a lot of time in front of a screen it’s almost a never-ending cycle. Camping is the perfect way to disconnect from the high-speed life and reconnect with simple pleasures such as sitting in front of a bonfire, laying under the stars and waking up to the smell of burnt wood and birds chirping. Camping, Caravanning or Hiking whatever you are into it’s the best way to get away from the constant buzz of notifications and spend some quality time in nature with your family, mates or just by yourself. 1.     Cathedral Ranges State Park

Cathedral Ranges State Park is about two hours on the Maroondah Highway. You will be treated to absolutely breathtaking views of the rugged upturned ridge stretching across seven kilometres. Cathedral Ranges State Park is one of the most popular weekend camping spots for families and offers activities such as bushwalking, abseiling and rock-climbing. There are plenty of different spots you can pitch your tent but one of the most popular camping spots is Cooks Mill. It has 30 shaded campsites tucked among the tall gum trees, so make sure you book ahead otherwise you will miss out on a pot. In terms of facilities, non-flush toilets, picnic tables and fireplaces. The park doesn’t recommend drinking water from the Little River, so you can either BYO water or even better you can get your hands on a Sawyer Water Filter and drink water on the go!

2.     The Grampians

Even if you are not from Victoria, I am sure you have heard about the Grampians. It’s a stunning national park with the most beautiful sunsets and you can get up close and personal with some of the amazing wildlife that the national park has to offer. The Grampians is about three hours west of Melbourne making it a perfect weekend camping getaway. There are heaps of good campsites available at the Grampians, but Halls Gap Lakeside is definitely our most recommended one. Halls Gap has beautiful views of the surrounding mountains, it even has powered campsites and you can book a huge safari tent if you were inclined to a bit of glamping. In terms of activities there is plenty to do around that area. Aside from the usual hiking and bushwalking, you can go kayaking on the nearby Lake Bellfield or go fishing for brown trout and you can even ride horses along the trails.

3.     Mount Buffalo

In the winters Mount Buffalo attracts skiers, but in the summertime it’s the perfect spot for some alpine camping. It offers picturesque snow gum woodlands, majestic waterfalls and fields of wildflower. Lake Catani is the recommended campground for Mount Buffalo. You can grab unpowered camp sites which are suitable for tents, caravans and campervans and they include the basic amenities. Of course, one of the most appealing factors of Mount Buffalo is the Horn and Lake Catani is the perfect spot to stay if you are looking to summit the Horn. In terms of activities, again there is plenty to do, you can rock climb, go canoeing, kayak across the lake and go hiking or bike riding in the wilderness.

4.     Wilsons Promontory National Park

The Wilsons Prom National Park is the southernmost tip of Australia and it has everything from granite mountains to pristine beaches and rainforests. The most popular camping spot at the prom is the Tidal River campground. One side of the campground you have clear and beautiful waters of the river and then on the other side you have the beautiful beach. Tidal River campground offers 484 campsites suitable for tents and caravans including 20 powered sites and 11 remote sites but it gets quits busy, so you will want to book ahead to make sure you get a spot. In terms of facilities the campground has everything you need and more, gas barbies, hot showers, dishwashing stations and its even got its own outdoor cinema!

5.     Phillip Island

Phillip Island is known for more than just its penguins it also offers a fair few camping sites for the perfect weekend getaway. One of the popular spots is the BIG4 Phillip Island Caravan Park. The best part about this caravan park is that you can get up close and personal with the fairy penguins and friendly koalas without having to spend big bucks waiting in line in the blistering cold. The campground is quite popular and its always good to book early so you don’t miss out on a spot. The campground itself sits on a nature reserve near Newhaven Beach, and it’s got great facilities. Toilets, showers, laundry service, a kiosk for basic supplies, plus volleyball and basketball for the kids.
