Tips To Transform Your Backyard

Too often, our backyards are underutilised. Transform your backyard into a retreat that appeals to you and your family’s personal needs. Your backyard can be the perfect place to relax, entertain guests, spend quality time with family or just sit and soak up the summer sun.

Here are some tips on how to transform your backyard:

1. Clean Up

The first step in creating a better backyard experience is identifying how much space you have in your backyard. You should trim and cut overgrown trees and bushes, give the backyard an overall clean and remove anything that does not belong in the backyard. This gives you a clean slate to work on, lets you assess the area, and gives you inspiration for better use of the spaces you have.

2. Comfortable Seating

Good outdoor furniture is essential for any backyard. The next step in creating a better backyard experience is to assess the type of outdoor furniture you would like to invest in. There are many different styles and options to choose from. Our recommendation is to go with something that not only looks good but is comfortable, reliable and lasts in the harsh Australian climate.

3. Add Lushness with Plants

Surround your outdoor space with lush greenery. Plant containers with eye-catching varieties and arrange them near your seating to provide living décor. Even a small planter with different succulents can serve as a beautiful centrepiece for an outdoor table. You can never have too many plants! So go with what your heart desires, go big and bold with magnolias, or you can have beautiful native plants scattered around your backyard.

4. Plan Outdoor Lighting

It would help if you had outdoor lighting to enjoy your backyard after the sun sets. At its most basic, you need some porch lighting to illuminate access to the house and provide ambient lighting. You can also use a combination of wall-mounted downlights, candlelight, or electric lamps to light up your backyard. Of course, you should also illuminate steps and walkways for safety. If you have an outdoor kitchen, you will need a good light source over the grill and work areas.

5. Don’t Forget the Shade

The backyard is to enjoy the sunny afternoons and warm nights, but even sun-worshippers will welcome a little shade in the heat of summer. Patio umbrellas, mature trees, retractable awnings or even pergolas are all great options for providing shade. Choose the one that best suits the space and also your budget.

6. Add a Water Feature

The perfect water feature in a backyard is a private swimming pool, which cools you off and allows you to exercise all within the privacy of your yard. But most people don’t have the space or budget to have one added. Fortunately, there are smaller, more affordable water features to consider that could even be more calming, like small garden ponds, fountains and birdbaths.
